Sometimes, we just need to see that good things are happening. That was how I felt today, anyway. Reading about babies in NICUs being given formula, sugar water and pacifiers and kept in little plastic boxes rather than held at their mother's breast and nursed totally ruined my mood.
Then I stumbled across a link to
Earth Birth. Women in developing countries making a difference, not through drugs and knives and "westernization" but through empowering women, encouraging women and girls and through viewing birth as a means, not only to a baby, but to social change.
From their site:
We view childbirth as an act of social change. Safe and peaceful birth experiences are necessary for generations that are to live without war.
We are a community of health care professionals, activists and academics. We stand in solidarity with women who have been victims of war, who have been silenced, abused, or shunned. We move with and support those who have dedicated their lives to peace and justice, to creation in the face of destruction, to fearless resilience.
Powerful stuff, isn't it?
